Letter from the Chief Executive Officer

Dear Members, friends and associates of ALABC,

This last month has been an extremely busy time for the ALABC fraternity, bringing numerous networking, educational and business development opportunities for members, partners and the broader business community.

IMARC 2025 proved to be our most successful iteration thus far, and I am delighted to report that all our networking events were sold out and our business activities fully supported. I would like to highlight, in particular, the inaugural ALABC LatAm Lounge, which was opened by The Honourable Ros Bates, Queensland Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training, and the Chilean Deputy Minister of Mining, Suina Chahuán Kim. With around 1,000 people visiting the Lounge, it became a focal point for Latin American relations and a meaningful platform for business-to-business engagement.

This was followed by our Annual Brisbane Dinner, another sold-out event, where the University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Terry AC, and Andrew Jessett, Head of Innovation Funds at RCF and Chair of ALABC member Russell Mineral Equipment, delivered insightful speeches about the role of innovation, sustainable growth and emerging trends supporting transpacific collaboration. Australia and Latin America’s shared commitment to innovation was further showcased the following day at the University of Queensland Latin American Colloquium, whose theme this year was Biofuels.

At the same time, our membership base continues to grow and diversify. This month’s new members reflect deep capability across mining services, sustainability technologies, equipment manufacturing, mobility, professional services and cross-cultural communication. Their expansion into Latin American markets is a clear signal of growing appetite and confidence in the region. Welcome!

As we approach the end of the year, we invite you to participate in the last of our webinars for 2025—Uruguay: Business with Confidence—as well as our Christmas Sundowner, where we will be hosting H.E. Andrew Martin, Australia’s Ambassador, and welcoming H.E. Patricia Terán, the Ambassador of Ecuador, who will share up-to-date perspectives on both countries. We look forward to seeing our Sydney-based members and friends on 1 December to raise a glass to 2025 and to share what ALABC has planned for 2026.

Mexico - International Tender for Passenger Trains

Mexico’s Railway Transport Regulatory Agency has launched an open international bid for the acquisition of 47 DMU passenger trains with ERTMS, covering the Mexico City–Querétaro, Querétaro–Irapuato, and Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo routes.

Celebrating 50 Years of Australia–Colombia Relations

The Australia–Colombia Dialogue and the Embassy of Colombia in Australia will host a Commemorative Gala Dinner marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Organised in partnership with ALABC.

Program: Welcome cocktail, three-course dinner, cultural performance, live music, and the launch of From the Outback to the Andes: Fifty Years Advancing Australia–Colombia Relations.

NOJA Power Tests EcoLink in Brazil

NOJA Power’s EcoLink single-phase recloser was successfully tested with Energisa in Cuiabá, Brazil. The trial targets improved protection and efficiency on low-fault-current lines, where traditional systems fall short. The results highlight EcoLink’s reliability and advanced performance in enhancing network stability.

COALAR 2024-25 Highlights Report

This report outlines the key activities and impact of the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR) from February 2024 to June 2025. During this period, COALAR successfully delivered the 2024–25 grant round, engaged extensively across priority sectors, and supported strategic initiatives that strengthened Australia’s ties with Latin America. These achievements reflect COALAR’s commitment to enduring partnerships and mutual understanding between the regions.

Brazil's Role in the Global Agenda for the Critical and Strategic Minerals 

At COP30 in Belém, the session “Sustainable Mining Energy Transition: Unlocking Investments and Fostering Brazil’s Potential in the Sector” spotlighted Brazil’s growing influence in the global critical minerals landscape. The dialogue underscored the country’s strategic role in securing resilient supply chains and attracting decarbonisation-aligned investment.

05 November, Brisbane Annual Dinner 2025

The ALABC Annual Brisbane Dinner 2025 brought together leaders from business, government, and diplomacy to celebrate the growing Australia–Latin America partnership.

With keynote addresses by Professor Deborah Terry and Andrew Jessett, guests explored themes of innovation, trade, and sustainable growth. We were also honoured by the presence of Mr Jonathan Krause MP, Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Latin America Group.

21 October,  ALABC LatAm Mining Dinner 2025

Supported by PromPeru, WorkInitiatives, Russell Mineral Equipment, LATAM Airlines, the Embassy of Cuba/MINEM and Paydirt, the event highlighted strategic opportunities across mining, finance and innovation.

We extend our sincere thanks to our speakers, Vice Minister Suina Chahuán, Dr Julio Velarde, Andrew Jessett and Chris Carman, for their valuable contributions. Delegations from PromPeru, ProChile, APCCI, AusCham, TIQ and Brazil joined corporate tables from across the ecosystem, reinforcing strong commercial collaboration between Australia and Latin America.

21 October, Grand Opening Latam Lounge at IMARC

ALABC’s presence at IMARC 2025 was stronger than ever, highlighted by the official opening of the Latin America Lounge by Hon. Ros Bates MP and Suina Chahuán, Vice Minister of Mining of Chile.

Across the three days, the Lounge delivered a full program of activity, including informal member–delegate networking hubs, pop-up presentations, media interviews, ProChile and TIQ briefings, visits from Austrade leadership, a high-volume Business Matching Day, and a company showcase, reinforcing the depth of Australia–Latin America collaboration in mining and investment.

20 October, ALABC Delegate Welcome Breakfast

Proudly supported by Global Victoria, the event convened more than 120 senior stakeholders. It brought together a distinguished diplomatic cohort, including Latin American Ambassadors and senior representatives from Brazil, alongside delegations from APCCI, AusCham, PromPeru, ProChile, and Brazil’s mining and trade sectors. Representatives from DFAT, Austrade, TIQ and Global Victoria engaged with ALABC members across mining, METS, infrastructure, legal, education and technology.
