Winners Announced: 2011 Australia-Latin America Business Excellence Awards

Three worthy winners were recognised last night for excellence in doing business in Latin America at the Australia-
Latin America Business Council’s (ALABC) Annual Sydney Dinner.

Chimu Adventures and Ausenco were winners of the 2011 Australia-Latin America Business Excellence Awards, as
was Bernard Wheelahan, former Chairman of the Council on Australia Latin American Relations (COALAR), who
received a special award.

ALABC Members visit Exposibram in Brazil

A large but slightly different contingent of ALABC members were visible among the 400 exhibitors at the Brazil mining tradeshow Exposibram which was held in Belo Horizonte on 26-29 September 2011. 

The overall Exposibram was good.  Although space-limited to about 400 exhibitors, most of the stands were of a very high quality and the event was a gastronomic festival as well as a mining tradeshow.

A large contingent of ALABC members were visible among the 1,140 exhibitors at the Perú mining tradeshow Extemin and related technical conference Perumin which were held simultaneously in the southern city of Arequipa on 12-16 September 2011.

Crossing the Copacabana: the wooing of Brazil after Lula

In economic history, you can see how times change. Once upon a time, a century ago, and even 50 years ago, Argentina was one of the richest economies in the world, and Brazil one of the poorest. But on my recent trip to Brazil one of my hostess’s in Rio de Janeiro commented that “even her maid took her holidays in Buenos Aires because it was now so cheap!” I thought this was symbolic of the recent changes of fortunes for the two South American neighbours.
