Media Release

Appointment of Chief Executive Officer of ALABC

The Australia-Latin America Business Council (ALABC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Marcelo Salas as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ALABC, effective from 1 May, 2018.

As CEO, Marcelo will be responsible for the day to day operations of the ALABC, managing all aspects of ALABC’s secretariat and working closely with the Chair and ALABC’s Board of Directors to enhance the delivery of services to ALABC’s members and stakeholders, and to strengthen ALABC’s role in promoting the business links between Australia and the Latin American region.

Marcelo is an accomplished executive with more than 25 years’ of international experience in senior roles in government and in the private sector, and in a diverse range of industries including mining, engineering, manufacturing and agribusiness.

Marcelo was born in Chile, but has resided in Australia for over 18 years. During his extensive diplomatic career, Marcelo served as Senior Trade Commissioner for Chile in Australia and the USA. In recent years Marcelo has worked as an international business developer and, prior to his appointment with ALABC, was a Senior Partner at Euromonitor International, the world's leading independent provider of strategic market research. Marcelo also served as a director of ALABC from 2010 to 2017 and thus possesses a deep understanding of ALABC and its members.

In announcing the appointment, ALABC chairman, Jose Blanco, stated, “Marcelo brings a wealth of experience to ALABC and has the skills and drive needed to contribute to the continued growth of ALABC. His familiarity with the workings of ALABC, knowledge of the Latin American region and proven track record of helping companies to do business in foreign markets, makes him the ideal person to manage the expansion of ALABC”.

Mr Blanco added that “The combination of a full-time CEO of Marcelo’s calibre and the strong leadership that will be provided by a highly-qualified and dedicated board of directors led by Chair-Elect, Richard Andrews, should ensure that ALABC’s members enjoy increased value and that the Council continues to go from strength to strength.”

Responding to his appointment, Marcelo stated, “I am delighted to have this opportunity to contribute to the growth of ALABC and look forward to working closely with the Chair and the ALABC board to provide members and the broader stakeholders with added benefits and to expand business links between Australia and Latin America.”
