It offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, and has produced numerous alumni of distinction ranging from Nobel Prize-winners in medicine, physics and literature, to heads of government in Australia and also overseas, to international leaders in professions such as engineering and law as well as industry and commerce.
The University of Adelaide is a world-ranking research-intensive University, rated in the top one percent in the world in 14 major fields according to Thomson’s 2011 Essential Science Indicators: agricultural sciences, plant and animal sciences, environment/ecology, geosciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, clinical medicine, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behaviour, immunology, psychiatry/psychology, and social sciences.
The University is home to a number of important research institutes and centres. These are focussed on issues of major national and international significance – food production, minerals and energy resources, climate change and environmental sustainability, photonics, and health. The University is also involved in a number of cooperative research centres which link key industries with government and higher education research institutions.
The research and teaching activities of the University has a strong international orientation. Its student population of over 25,000 includes more than 7,000 students from 99 countries around the world. Annual surveys of these students confirm the quality and affordability of their experience.
