Banco Santander is Spain's largest bank and ranks in the top 10 banks worldwide by market capitalization. It is rated AA and in 2010 achieved a profit in excess of Euro 8bn. It has had a presence in Australia through a representative office since 1990 and as a branch since 1 December 2011, and has been at the forefront of promoting the flow of trade and investment between Australia and the markets of Latin America, where it operates the largest banking network in the region.
Banco Santander was founded in 1857 and today ranks as one the largest and most successful banks in the world. It is a full service bank, offering both retail and wholesale banking products and services in most of the markets where it is present. Headquartered in Madrid, its operations cover over 40 countries, with a network of offices and subsidiaries across Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, other European countries, Latin America, the United States and, more recently, Asia-Pacific. Altogether, Santander operates through 5,871 offices in Continental Europe, 1,322 in the United Kingdom, 5,745 in Latin America and 722 in the United States. Latin America is an important market for Santander, contributing over 40% of group profit. Within the region, Santander operates the largest bank in Chile, the third-largest in Mexico and the fifth-largest in Brazil. It also has important operations in Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay.
