Xstrata Copper is the fourth largest global copper producer and one of the world’s largest producers of smelter and refined copper, including from third party materials. Headquartered in Brisbane, Xstrata Copper is one of the commodity business units within the major global diversified mining group Xstrata plc. Our mining and metallurgical operations and development projects span eight countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and the USA. Our recycling business (Xstrata Recycling) has plants in the United States and offices in Canada and Asia.
Our operations and projects are administered through a regional divisional management structure, which ensures that critical decisions are taken close to the related businesses. In Latin America, our operations and projects include:
- Argentina – the Minera Alumbrera open pit mine (50% controlling interest) located in the north-west province of Catamarca, and the bi-national El Pachón development project located in the San Juan Province, four kilometres from the Chilean border.
- Chile – the Altonorte metallurgical facility and the Lomas Bayas open pit mine in northern Chile’s Anotofagasta region, the Collahuasi open pit mine (44% interest) in northern Chile’s Tarapacá region, and the Energía Austral electricity generation project in southern Chile’s Aysén region.
- Peru – the Tintaya open pit mine and neighbouring Antapaccay development project in southern Peru’s Cusco region, the Las Bambas development project in southern Peru’s Apurimac region, and the Antamina open pit mine (33.75% interest) in north-central Peru’s Ancash region.
